Experience The Magic Of Montana -- fly fishing at its finest.
Looking for a place to just get away from it all? A place of quiet and solitude along with some incredible fishing? The hardest thing about fly fishing in Montana is keeping your eye on your fly and not the spectacular scenery. You can find literally thousands of miles of trout filled water within driving distance. Each of Montana's rivers has a different personality, from pristine freestones like the Yellowstone River to serene tailwaters like the Missouri. There are a vast multitude of rivers, spring creeks, and lakes available as well, from sites with easy access to those in remote wilderness.
People often ask when is the best time to come to experience Montana trout fishing at it's finest. It's a hard question to answer. One could say you should come and fish any time you can get here because our fishing can be great all season. Dry fly enthusiasts will be in heaven July through September. This is what most anglers consider the "prime time" because your best weather is during these months, though its always good insurance to bring cool and wet weather gear at any time of the year. Spring run-off can vary, but typically occurs at its heaviest during June. From ice-out until the rivers clear, lake fishing opportunities abound.
Because of the sheer number of river miles and the many valley and high country lakes, crowding is not a concern. You can definitely find a place to get away from it all. If you are more adventuresome and enjoy fewer people on the water, fishing during the pre-runoff early spring of late March through early May, or perhaps trying later in the fall -October and even early November, you might get in some of the best fishing of the year! Our rivers and spring creeks often provide both solitude and incredible fishing during these times.
Westslope cutthroat trout are the predominant fish species. These indigenous trout have adapted well to the cold Montana waters. Because of their cooperative nature, cutthroats are just plain fun to catch. It is easy to become fond of this native species. Rainbow trout are abundant and provide the power and energy this species is known for. Area waters also provide fishing opportunities for grayling, brook trout, lake trout, perch, pike, bass and whitefish.
The Bitterroot River in western Montana is a medium sized river that begins with the confluence of the East Fork and the West Fork near Connor, MT. It flows through the scenic Bitterroot Valley on its way to the confluence with the Clark Fork near Missoula, MT. The Sapphire mountains rise to the east while the Bitterroot mountains are found to the west. The Bitterroot Valley itself is lush by Montana standards, and is also located in a sort of banana belt. While it can get cold during the winter in the Bitterroot Valley, real cold days, like eastern and central Montana experiences, are the exception and not the rule. Unlike many of the rivers located in Montana that flow through isolated and remote country, the Bitterroot Valley is fairly well-developed and one of the fastest growing regions of Montana. As a result, services and other amenities are easy to find.
The Bitterroot River has moderate fly fishing pressure in relation to other Montana rivers. During the early season, fly fishing pressure can be heavy, but tapers off as the summer wears on. The river has moderate flows in its upper stretches with slower stretches below Florence. The banks of the Bitterroot River are a mix of woodland and grass, as the valley is a prime agricultural area in Montana.
